INTRODUCTION

Nanoscience is an emerging field of research related to the capability to construct extremely small objects (nanotechnology). It is a highly cross-disciplinary research area, which is going to play a crucial role in future scientific discoveries and new technologies. Thus, in the near future individuals with proper skills and experience in Nanoscience will be required by advanced research and technological centers.

For this reason, the Materials Physics Department (UPV/EHU) and the Center of Materials Physics (CSIC-UPV/EHU), in collaboration with the Donostia International Physics Center and the CIC Nanogune, offer a new postgraduate program in Nanoscience. Participants will complete an individualized one-year program with 60 credits (ECTS) to be granted a Master’s degree in Nanoscience (MSc). Research with internationally renowned teams, direct contact with senior researchers and the possibility of further study is offered as an integral part of the program.

Who should get involved? Physicists, Chemists and Engineers interested in completing their education and acquire the necessary capabilities to work in tasks related with research in Nanoscience.

When and where? Next Master Courses will start in Sptember 2014 at the Center of Materials Physics and the Materials Physics Department, at the Gipuzkoa Campus of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) in Donostia-San Sebastián (Spain).

Language: Teaching will be in English, while student presentations in other languages may be accepted.

OBJECTIVES

To provide the student with the basic concepts and the most commonly used working tools in the field of Nanoscience, including the use and interpretation of the results of the experimental techniques that are specific of the Nanotechnology research laboratories, topics related to the nanomaterials and their applications, and a general knowledge on the research activity at the international level in the field of Nanoscience. In addition, during his/her research work, the student will receive, based on his/her choice, the skills that are necessary in the research work devoted to applications that is developed in Technological Centers, or those necessary in the basic/oriented research that is carried out in academic research groups. After completing the master, the students will be also able to start developing the research work that may allow obtaining the PhD degree.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY

Students will devote at least two months in the program to develop a research project of their own, in order to complete the Master’s thesis. Well-recognized international research teams will host the students, providing a first-class scientific environment that will help the students to grow the necessary capabilities to bring to completion their scientific research project. The research work initiated during the Master’s program can also be the starting point of a Doctoral research work, that may eventually lead to the obtention of the European PhD degree (Doctor Europeus). Furthermore, the students will have the opportunity to carry out research activities in close contact with nearby Technological Centers coordinated by CIC Nanogune. Finally, the student will be able to have direct contact with high-level researchers, visiting from other institutions, facilitating further scientific stages in centers of high international reputation.
