PhD PROGRAM

'Physics of Nanostructures and Advanced Materials'  is a Ph.D. program of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) which has been recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Education as a highly-qualified Ph.D. program (Mención de Calidad MCD2007-00052).

This Ph.D. program consists in a first period (typically 1 year) where the student obtains a general background on nanoscience (Master in Nanoscience), acquiring at the same time the basic abilities for developing a short term research work (the Master Thesis). After completing this master program (or having an equivalent degree obtained in other university on related topics), the student must apply for the official registration of his/her Ph.D. Thesis project following the rules dictated by UPV/EHU. Application forms required to register the Ph.D. Thesis Project in the Department of Materials Physics are the following:

 

The second period of the Ph.D. program (typically 2-3 years) will be mostly devoted to the reserach project. Nevertheless, the student may follow those courses that the Ph.D. supervisor could consider of interest, either at the UPV/EHU and/or in other universities or research centers.

At the end of this second period, the PhD work has to be defended at the UPV/EHU in order to obtain the official (Spanish) Ph.D. degree by the UPV/EHU. It is intended that the majority of the Ph.D. thesis works followed in the framework of this Ph.D. program will meet the requirements for obtaining the Doctor Europeus mention.

 

Research lines involved in the Ph.D. Program:

The research groups responsible of the PNAM Ph.D. program are those belonging to the Center of Material Physics (joint center CSIC-UPV/EHU) and/or the Material Physics Department (UPV/EHU). The main research lines of these groups are:

· Theory and modeling of nanostructures and low-dimensional systems.
· Nanostructures, biomolecules, and advanced materials.
· Experimental characterization of nanoscopic systems.
· Nanostructured polymeric materials.
· Photonic Nanomaterials.
· Magnetism of micro/nano-crystalline materials.

In addition, other research lines related with the applications of nanomaterials and nanotechnology, as those developped in several technological centers in the sourronding, are also considered. The connection between the various technological centers and the PNAM Ph.D. program is going to be coordinated by the research center CIC Nanogune.
